A handful of blackberries

At the end of a long, stressful day, I got a quick reminder of the love and plenty in this world: there, outside my apartment building, the bramble had a few handfuls of ripe blackberries. I gathered a couple handfuls at the mere cost of a couple of thorns. And I shared them with my husband. I even left plenty for the squirrels and birds.

yay!

I just had my first blueberry off my new bushes (the big harvest - of six - came while I was away and my sweetie got to have that feast to herself!) mmmmm!

We also made strawberry rhubarb pie with my new rhubarb (we had to buy strawberries, but they were cheap!) - I LOVE strawberry rhubarb pie!

mmmmmm... blackberries!

I found some locally grown organic strawberries this last weekend. Organic is super important to me in strawberries, because commercially farmed strawberries don't taste like strawberries to me. I spent part of Saturday visiting with a friend I don't get to see very often while nibbling away at the fruit I'd found (not just strawberries, cherries!)

I also like strawberry rhubarb pie. Mmmmm. I think I'll stop by the farmer's stand on the way home for peaches....

strawberries are also one of the five things with the worst residue if you buy them non-organic (green peppers are another one - and I hate green pepppers anyway!, I can't remember the others) these were organic, but from california. I went and did "pick your own" a few weeks ago, but they're all gone now. I wonder if there still are some?? I should freeze a bunch.

I don't think I have anymore home-grown fruit coming. My raspberry bush isn't producing yet, and the blueberries are minimal (and it's the strawberries' first year) and the cherry tree is done. sigh. We have the cutest little eggplants though, and lots of green tomatoes....

I did buy peaches at the co-op this week, mmmmmmm! I love peaches! (they pretty much don't grow here :(

I have a really nasty reaction to green peppers, so it's moot anyway. And organic v. non-organic, I can't imagine someone who's had real strawberries settling for those waterbags. Ick.

Mmmm. Eggplants. Tomatoes - imam bayildi waiting to happen. And fried green tomatoes with some baba ganoush for dipping, and ...

I shouldn't have that many nightshade family things together, but oh, yum...
